I have a Gateway laptop NV78. It's a 64 bit. It has dual core CPU and 4 gigs of RAM.

When I installed Ubuntu 12.10, the monitor stopped working. My external monitor hooked up through VGA works fine. I don't know what graphics card I have; the computer says graphics unknown.

I is this a hardware fault? If the BIOS POST message isn't displayed anymore then it is. If that does work then it is a general "blank screen issue": askubuntu.com/questions/162075/… –  gertvdijk Jan 1 '13 at 17:58
Hope this isn't too obvious, but... In the "Displays" window for "System Settings", does it show both monitors as enabled? You need to click on each one in the image and make sure it indicates "ON" with the switch under the images. Or, try checking "Mirror displays" first to see if that works. –  Marty Fried Jan 1 '13 at 19:17
