sorry if this doesn't make a lot of sense but I am no expert:-)

Have been using Ubuntu for a couple of years, I recently upgraded to 12.04.1 LTS and now my external hardrive will not let me access it. It mounts when I plug it in but when I try to write to it or delete anything it says it is write only. I have changed permissions but it still won't and just reverts back to read only. When the drive is plugged into the TV (via USB) I can watch things so that is working. Really don't know what to do next

Don' you mean that you can't write to it since it is read only? I've never seen a disk report itself to be write only. – hexafraction Dec 31 '12 at 15:20
write only does not exist so it is probably a typo. Q: did you change the permission of the MOUNT point (ie. the directory where it is mounted in and not the content of the disc)? – Rinzwind Dec 31 '12 at 15:30
