I have a kickass machine (for its day) a quad core duo 3Ghz with 8 gigs of memory. More than enough to make any linux distro happy. I've got xubuntu 11.10 installed on it, some kind of nvidia card I forget and everything works great all the time.
Except when I get on a backup kick and I run all my scripts to bzip up everything and copy it to my external usb2.0 hard drive and ftp it off site.
At the point the entire desktop UI freezes up for chunks of time, so much so that the mouse pointer won't even move.
The machine itself is fine and working great, but it becomes unusable, unless I ssh into it from another machine and use a terminal to do whatever I want.
I can't find any information on other people having this problem or what to do about it. Help? Any suggestions?
