I'm having a really hard time getting into vsftpd via the internet, i can connect locally and use my local login credentials but if I try to access it from the internet it will not accept anything I enter. It won't accept any accounts or logins. I have port 20 open on my firewalls, iptables look like

Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT)

target prot opt source destination
ACCEPT tcp -- anywhere anywhere tcp dpt:ssh ACCEPT tcp -- anywhere anywhere tcp dpt:ftp-data ACCEPT tcp -- anywhere anywhere tcp dpt:ftp

Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT) target prot opt source destination
ACCEPT tcp -- anywhere anywhere tcp dpt:ssh ACCEPT tcp -- anywhere anywhere tcp dpt:ftp-data ACCEPT tcp -- anywhere anywhere tcp dpt:ftp

Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT) target prot opt source destination
ACCEPT tcp -- anywhere anywhere tcp dpt:ssh ACCEPT tcp -- anywhere anywhere tcp dpt:ftp-data ACCEPT tcp -- anywhere anywhere tcp dpt:ftp

Is there a setting I might have overlooked?

UPDATE: Message sent: Login using username=Jake and password=[hidden]

Server replied: 421 Login incorrect. Do you want to retry?

When I use these same crudentials locally I can get in but in the web nothing works.

are you behind a router/nat device? is it possible connections from outside are being forwarded to another ftpd running on your lan? can you paste the entire ftplog when you connect from localhost vs from outside? –  max Dec 29 '12 at 6:55

I'm pretty sure the only ftp server i have running is the one i'm trying to get into. I've set the ip for my server in the DMZ on both my DSL router and network wireless router. How to I get the ftplog? –  Righteou5 Dec 29 '12 at 7:07

when i try to log in ip via http, it sends me to the dsl router. when i try to ftp it sends me to a login screen at port 21. I wonder if that helps –  Righteou5 Dec 29 '12 at 7:09

sounds like your using a web browser for a ftp client? if you use a actual ftp client you can see the ftp log –  max Dec 29 '12 at 7:30

using filezilla I get Protocol error: Unknown protocol identifier (0x50 0x50 0x48). Most likely connected to the wrong port. Connection to server closed. –  Righteou5 Dec 29 '12 at 8:20
