Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I am a new user trying to install either Ubuntu 12.04 or 12.10. I tried both, and downloaded each ISO file from Ubuntu's website and burned it. I was trying to dual boot it with Windows 7.

When I start installing Ubuntu, it starts fine but then after an hour when it comes to a purple screen it shows errors, something like a Media error and then nothing happens from there. I haven't got any partition selection option but from a tutorial I found that I am supposed to get an option to select the partition at some point of time during the installation. It never comes.

I have to restart or shut down after that and then my Windows system boots up. When I try to install Ubuntu again, I have to do everything again and same thing happens.

It's a HP Pavillion DV5 with 2GB of RAM. How can I fix this so the installation succeeds?

DId you check the burned DVD's for defects? If not, please do so now and report the results. If it says they're good, then we'll really need to know exactly what the media-related error said (the complete exact message). If you cannot provide more details, you should attempt the installation again, and write down the error. You can then edit your question to include that information. It would be helpful if you were able to include information about what else, if anything, is on the screen when the error comes up. –  Eliah Kagan Dec 28 '12 at 10:00
