I found the main post I want to follow, but have a question on the instructions (and I don't have enough rep yet to add a comment)...

ATI Driver Install

I am running 12.10 on an AMD A4-3400 (integrated HD 6410D). In the 12.10 section it says:

Members will still need to install the drivers and same dependencies described in the answer above for 12.04LTS.

However, I don't find that very clear. It looks like I want to do the following, but I want to make sure so I don't mess anything up!

  • Uninstall current drivers
  • Install dependencies (from 12.04 section)
  • Then do I come back and follow the 12.10 section? It does't look like I should download the drivers or do anything from the 12.04 install section since I see a wget instruction that should get the driver for me. Is that correct??

So that is what is confusing me since the instruction says "install the drivers", I know this might seem straight forward for some, but I take things very literal (and I write lots of technical documents) and it says to me, 'install from above' which doesn't seem right.

Thanks for any and all help!

This is a very localized question, its not technical, in fact its a comment on another post (that just happens to be mine). Did you follow the instructions (literally) like others have? Did you run into difficultly when you did? if so you should describe your specific question here on AU. The previous post does not say "Install from above" as you have described. It states "install......same dependencies described in the answer above for 12.04LTS" – Stephen Myall Dec 27 '12 at 20:36
As stated in my post, I don't have rep to add a comment, I agree, it is a comment to an existing post! :) I have the quote EXACTLY as it is in the 12.10 section. "Members will still need to install the drivers and same dependencies described in the answer above for 12.04LTS." That to me is very unclear, sorry. When I go to the 12.04 section, it becomes unclear to me where to stop up there. I think I know what to do, but I want to make sure, I am someone who likes to have a plan and understand the commands before randomly typing them in. – ITB-GTI-10 Dec 27 '12 at 21:03
Update: Your instructions under 12.10 did NOT work. I cleaned/added dependencies.. HALT there, even on 32bit "sudo apt-get install ia32-libs" doesn't work. Had to get the multiarch. Then instead of installing the old drivers, I grabbed the beta version and continued with install. It is now working. However.. I would like to say again, the line is NOT clear. You need to read the statement and think what others would think. Your instructions are instructions in order, don't say install drivers AND dependencies from above, say install dependencies from above then come back and continue. – ITB-GTI-10 Dec 28 '12 at 15:07
