So I recently bought a HP p7-1449 with Windows 8 pre-installed. I want to dual boot the system with Ubuntu 12.10 and keep windows 8 too. I have Ubuntu 12.10 on a DVD bt when i try to boot from it it just goes straight to windows 8 or says Preparing Automatic Repair and just stays there until i manually reboot the system. I've tried disabling Secure boot and Fast boot and enabling Legacy Support but the outcome is the same and it doesn't work.

Any Suggestions?

You might need to tell the BIOS to boot from CD/DVD.

The most common way to enter the BIOS is to press the DELETE key when the computer is first booted(this seems to be becoming standard). On other systems it could be a different key, or combination of keys like ESC, F1, F2, F10, F12, Ctrl-Esc, Alt-Esc, Ctrl-Alt-Esc, Ctrl-Alt-Enter, Ins or even others. You might have to press, press and hold, or press multiple times. The best way to find out the details of that is to look in the users manual or search the manufactures website

Already set the boot order to boot from dvd but it still doesn't boot from the dvd it just goes "preparing automatic repair" – Umer Dec 27 '12 at 5:50

This is not regarding boot order. It is because of secure boot & UEFI in windows 8 pre-installed laptop – Web-E Dec 27 '12 at 6:01

In some systems, you have to change the boot order so that system boots from the DVD not from the Hard disk.

If you havent done so, try pressing Del/F2/F10 during the boot multiple times. Mostly the corresponding button is mentioned on the screen itself while booting.

yea i tried to boot a from a Usb but same outcome – Umer Dec 27 '12 at 5:52
