I have a Ubuntu 12.10 64 bit system and my Logitech E3500 webcam only shows black when starting skype or cheese.

Any ideas ?

Does it have a light that indicates it's turned on? What are the vendor/product id's? (terminal command lsusb) And what does the command v4l2-ctl --info give? (install the package v4l-utils if you don't have it yet). Are you using a USB Hub or directly connected?
