how does one, when saving any file, display all files as default, no matter what type of file extension one saves in?

example: scan a pic, click on "save image" or "save" or "save as"; name file; only files displayed when in the yet-to-save window are the image files; have to click on button that gives you a choice of what type of files to display "images" or "all files"; in this case, with my puter/OS you can't see the .jpg files you've already saved of the same subject w/o clicking on the display button for "all files".

how do i set the puter so that the default view of saved files is "all files", rather than having to click on the display button to "all files" every time i save any file?

i've looked under "file management preferences" but find nothing there that has an option for a default setting of the file display to "all files".

i want to be able to see all the files, no matter what extension, when i want to save something.

OS: Ubuntu 12.04

thanks
