I have the following problem:

I am using an old laptop which is permanently connected to the TV just for watching movies. The model of the laptop is Acer Ferrari 3000, and it's using an ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 as a graphics card .It is currently running Ubuntu 11.10 with the open source radeon driver.

I connect the laptop to the TV using an S-Video cable, and at first everything works flawlessly. The problem is that as the movie is playing, at random times the laptop stops sending signal to the TV. From that point, the only way I have found to make it send signal to the TV again is to reboot the system or suspend and restore it.

I'm also posting the following info hoping it will help you. Output of xrandr -q:

Before the problem occurs:

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 800 x 600, maximum 4096 x 4096 VGA-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) LVDS connected 800x600+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm 1400x1050 61.8 + 1280x1024 59.9

S-video connected 800x600+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm 800x600 59.9*+

After the problem occurs:

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 800 x 600, maximum 4096 x 4096 VGA-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) LVDS connected 800x600+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm 1400x1050 61.8 + 1280x1024 59.9

800x600 59.9* 848x480 59.7
720x480 59.7
640x480 59.4
S-video disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

I hope this helps. Any idea would be highly appreciated either for fixing the bug or for forcing xrandr to "see" the second screen again without reboot or suspend.

tnx in advance.

PS. I really don't want to upgrade to 12.10. I have the same problem with every version since 8.04 and I really don't think it will help. Also as the laptop is old I don't want it to run Unity which is much heavier than Gnome 2.

If this laptop's only purpose is watching movies you should try XBMC. It has a "stand alone" mode so a Desktop Environment isn't necessary. Just install Ubuntu server and XBMC. – Eric Carvalho Dec 22 '12 at 13:54
