I'm currently installing Ubuntu on an external HDD and have no trouble getting it to recognize the drive and get through to the copying files section of the install but when I hit the Installing system I believe it's called it hangs at 0% for quite a while. Is this typical or is it messing up on something due to it being an external hdd?

May you should add more detail about your external HDD and show your hang screen. –  Smile.Hunter Dec 22 '12 at 9:33

More details would be helpful. I regularly boot Ubuntu and other distros installed to a Toshiba exteral HDD from a Lenovo T61. But hardware compatibility can be tricky. My newish HP dv6 cannot boot from the same external drive. –  chaskes Dec 29 '12 at 16:50
