I installed Kubuntu 12.10 from USB, had to edit Grub aswell. Grub appears to be working properly (dual booting with Windows 8). Everything works fine until selecting "ubuntu" from Grub. Screen goes black and my monitor says "Video format not supported".

The USB Kubuntu works like a charm, 1920x1080 60hz. But the hdd-install of kubuntu doesn't. Problem is not grub-related, nor can't i find xorg.conf from /etc/X11 folder.

I'm clueless on where to go next or what to do.

Sounds like an automatic mode selection bug. What video card? What display? And how did you connect them? (DVI/HDMI/D-Sub) And what kernel version is it (press e on the "Ubuntu" entry if it does not mention it there already)? –  gertvdijk Dec 21 '12 at 23:14
appears the problem is very persistent. i tried using wubi to install Ubuntu 12.10, same error instantly after booting from the windows 8 loader into graphical gui. Oh and those specs of mine, my videocard is Radeon HD 7450 connected via HDMI into a Philips LCD FullHD-TV. Kernel is ubuntu 3.5.0-17 –  Zan Dec 22 '12 at 9:30
