I have a W520 with ubuntu 12.04 32-bit installed. I also have an additional monitor that supports DisplayPort. I have the laptop connected to this external monitor, however, I cannot get ubuntu to detect the display when using DisplayPort. I also tried VGA, and this is detected right away and the extra monitor functions well, but the picture isn't as sharp as it could be. So I would like to use the DisplayPort connector.

Note:
1. I have configured the graphics in the BIOS to always use discreet graphics.
2. I have the nvidia-current-updates-dev drivers installed.

Any ideas why the display can't be detected?

Could you try enabling the display in the NVIDIA settings program? My W520 has the same problem (with DP -> HDMI) and I have to use NVIDIA's tool to enable the second monitor. –  Xiao-Long Chen Dec 18 '12 at 8:36

I t wasn't even recognised by nvidia settings. I think this must have been an issue with the monitor, because I left it unplugged overnight and when I booted this morning it worked fine :-D –  ekj Dec 18 '12 at 23:36
