Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I am trying to install another linux distro besides ubuntu. However, I want to retain my existing windows based loader. Currently, as per my knowledge, MsDos loads grub which then loads Ubuntu (with loop back trick).

Now, I have a new linux distro installed on /dev/sda8 (/boot for new distro) where as /root for that OS is installed on /dev/sda9.

I tried following steps 1. Add entry into 40_custom of ubuntu grub 2. update grub

But upon booting via that entry, it is not able to load the new OS and shows me blank screen. What could be the problem?

Additional data:

  1. grub.cfg file of ubuntu

Grub usually picks up the other OS automatically. Unless you have disabled 30_os-prober. Just run sudo update-grub. What happens when you run sudo os-prober? –  bcbc Dec 19 '12 at 2:49

PS your manual entry is a bit off. You're setting /dev/sda8 (/boot) as root which is good, but then immediately overriding it with the search --set=root back to /dev/sda9. So grub won't locate the kernel and initrd. –  bcbc Dec 19 '12 at 5:20

@bcbc You are right. I changed entry and it is working fine. Interesting os-prober does not help if my other linux device is not mounted. –  Amey Jah Dec 19 '12 at 14:16

It should work without mounting. It's probably worth filing a bug report (or checking for an existing bug). Maybe pad.lv/1038093 ? –  bcbc Dec 19 '12 at 17:08

This question should instead be filed as a bug report, and as such is off-topic, thanks! Instructions on filing a bug report are here. –  Seth Jan 2 '13 at 3:43
