I am unable to shutdown. Whenever I try to shutdown, it reboots. I am running Ubuntu 64bit 12.10. It is a desktop pC. No dual boot. I had windows 7 before. The graphics driver is AMD radeon HD6670.Motherboard is Intel.

I have run the boot-repair and this is the result:

I had the same problem. It went away when I deleted ~/.Xauthority.

I am running Ubuntu 12.10 on an HP Envy M6 (amd version) and I had the same problem. I used this command: sudo apt-get install laptop-mode-tools and it worked for me.

Try to re-install upstart. I had that problem before and when I re-installed upstart it went better.

sudo apt-get install upstart --reinstall
