hi my update manager is not working. Each time i open it there is an error messages that says

E;Type 'Reading' is not known on line 63 in source list/etc/apt/source.list.

as a new user to linux how can I fix this problem. i use ubuntu 10.10 maverick meerkat

It is impossible to say what is wrong with the file with the information you give. Consider to add that row to your query. Or you can remove the line by putting # at the beginning of the line.

To edit press ALT+F2 and then type gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

NB. Maveric is no longer supported, you should think about doing an upgrade or even better, downloading the latest version to avoid upgrading from one version to the next.
