apt-get update fails to fetch files, “Temporary failure resolving …” error

Just installed Server 12.04.01 with LAMP and now I am looking to add PhpMyAdmin and php-pear. I can't install them.

sudo apt-get update (works fine)
sudo apt-get install phpmyadmin

yields many messages like:

Failed to fetch Temporary failure resolving ''
Failed: command not found

This question was marked as an exact duplicate of an existing question.

The problem could be bug #1000244. To fix, do

sudo dpkg-reconfigure resolvconf

and reboot.

Thanks - tried that and it had no positive impact. Same issue exists - numerous errors – mike n Dec 15 '12 at 15:16
