When I use the headphone jack I only get sound out of 1 channel. What can I try? I'd appreciate any help diagnosing / fixing this.

I have an HP Pavilion dm3t notebook.

I have a similar problem on a ThinkPad T61p. The audio used to work fine. I'm not sure when I lost the right channel but I have. I've tried different headphones. I get the problem whether I plug into the laptop headphone port, or the docking station headphone port. I've checked the balance in Sound Preferences and with ALSA mixer. I've tried muting and un-muting all sources. Nothing seems to work. – user11222 Feb 21 '11 at 21:23

The first place I would look (after trying a different set of headphones) is the sound preferences setup (System -> Preferences -> Sound). Go to the "Hardware" tab and verify that your sound device has a reasonable "Profile" setting (mine is set to Analog Stereo Output):

Hardware Tab

Then, on the "Output" tab, verify that the "Balance" slider is centered, rather than all the way left or right:

Output Tab
