I wanted to get rid of black backgrounds in Cairo Dock so I followed the official guide https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu/Windows#How_to_control_window_opacity to install xcompmgr. After restart and logging in I have no desktop, only notifications. I can access terminal through [Alt+Ctrl+T]. How do I fix this? What went wrong. And above all - why is it that official instructions brake desktop?

Lubuntu 12.10 x64, clean Thinkpad T500 with AMD/ATI discrete graphics activated (and confirmed)

Removing xcompmgr and removing @xcompmgr -c from ~/.config/lxsession/Lubuntu/autostart alone didn't help. Since the directory lxsession contained only the autostart file I myself created as per the ubuntu community help article I removed it altogether using sudo rm -r ~/.config/lxsession/Lubuntu/ My system started with desktop after this. I installed xcompmgr back - still starting fine. I'm too novice to put it all together though into a decent answer though. Since the official instructions cause problems, what is the correct procedure to install xcompmgr on Lubuntu? – Bucic Dec 12 '12 at 20:14
xcompmgralone has settings to adjust shadows, transparency etc. See man xcompmgr – Uri Herrera Dec 12 '12 at 20:30
@UriHerrera This doesn't help me a bit. I'm a noob. I need more straightforward instructions. – Bucic Dec 12 '12 at 21:15
