When I go to click on NETWORK in the System Settings menu, the only option I have is Network Proxy. The Wired Connection and Wireless connection options are gone.

Also, can someone tell me how to get the firmware for a wireless connection? This is an acer Aspire 3690 running 12.04LTS.

I'm fairly new to Ubuntu, thanks for any help you can provide!

Do you have a network indicator in the menu bar? When you click on it what does the drop-down menu say about wired and wireless networks and/or connections? Please add this information to your question. What is your networking hardware? Run "lspci|grep -i '(net\|wi)'" and post the output in your question. – jdthood Dec 10 '12 at 14:11
The only thing I have is the diamond shaped outline icon that goes where the WiFi icon is – scott Dec 10 '12 at 14:59
Right-click on the network indicator which currently appears as a diamond-shaped outline and click Enable Networking. Does this fix e everything? – jdthood Dec 10 '12 at 15:08
Nope. Would re installing ubuntu fIx everything? I'm also having trouble wig wireless firmware – scott Dec 10 '12 at 15:16
Re-installing Ubuntu probably won't make any difference. If you don't have necessary wireless firmware installed then it's no surprise that your wireless network interface doesn't work. I see that the Acer Aspire 3690 has an Ethernet port. This should work, at least. If it doesn't, can you switch it on by running on wall power instead of battery, or by changing BIOS settings? What chipset implements the Ethernet interface? Please add the output of lspci to your question. – jdthood Dec 10 '12 at 19:36
