Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I love Gnome Shell, but what I dislike is that when I click Activities and start typing "Terminal" or something, it's sluggish to respond (it's ok on my machine with SSD, but not on my other machines with normal disks).

It seems like it only occurs to Gnome Shell to search for .desktop files at the time I want to search them. The 2nd time I do it, it works fast, so it's clearly about caching.

Is there a way to have it keep this stuff in cache?
