Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I'm new to Linux and ubuntu. I just installed ubuntu to my HP dv2000 laptop. I use an external 22" screen.

I want to change my screen resolution to 1980 x 1080 because that's the best setting I have used in Windows. But when I do that, the system just keep crashing (screen gone blank...).

Can anyone tell me what I need to do? I really like to make it work.

Thank you for reading my post.

It sounds like a driver module problem. To help you we'll need to know what kind of video you have. Please paste the results from the command "sudo lshw -C display" into an edit on your own post. –  fabricator4 Dec 5 '12 at 20:09

Hi fabricator4. Your right! I didn't realize that I need to installed Nvidia graphic driver (I know... what was I thinking). Once the driver is installed, the screen works perfectly! Thank you so much for the support! –  Phil Dec 6 '12 at 8:23
