How do I fix a “Problem with MergeList” error when trying to do an update?

Update manager doesn't want to run because of the error given below. The happens when trying to launch Ubuntu software center. I'm using Ubuntu 12.04. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks Sylvain

Error message:

E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, E:Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/gb.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_precise-updates_main_i18n_Translation-en, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

Problem solved with sudo apt-get update – Sylvain Dec 4 '12 at 10:34

I ran into this problem a few weeks ago. Try using the terminal (ctrl + t) and running sudo apt-get check. Then run your normal update and upgrade. Pretty sure that's what solved everything for me.
