Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I have the ATI driver installed on my ubuntu 12.04 x86_64 desktop machine

[ 15.657486] [fglrx] module loaded - fglrx 8.98.2 [Jul 27 2012] with 1 minors
[ 18.144891] fglrx_pci 0000:02:00.0: irq 53 for MSI/MSI-X

But i'm having issues with it as shown in this question, in short, it complains that is using indirect rendering

I was thinking in update the driver to a newer version or a different driver, but i'm not sure what are the steps to do that.

Can i use this version from AMD website or do i need to use some existing repository?

I found this Binary Driver guide howto, but it doesn't mention anything about how to uninstall existing versions, which i assume is required???
