Hello because of known trouble, I switched from lightdm to gdm (ubuntu 12.10).

Now gdm is demanding password twice before logging in, then it is freezing.

I have to restart machine and try to log-in then from new.

I had issues with logon passwords on 12.04 server that I solved by upgrading the ram. It was below the recommended amount. If your system load is high and using swap memory and you are on the edge of recommended ram for your version of Ubuntu, perhaps it is a similar issue. Sorry if not. –  Seminecis Dec 3 '12 at 17:40
gdm-greeter is known to hog memory. Did you face any problems with lightdm? or did you just switch because you knew there were problems? Because lightdm is the recommended, pre-installed option, which is obviously safe. –  SiddharthaRT Dec 4 '12 at 1:04
