I'm working on a perl script which is to run in starting up and shutting down processes of Ubuntu. I need to know which one is happening. Where can I find this information?

How exactly are you 'shutting them down'? Also: can't you simply add a print in your script just before or after the shut-down operation so you know it happened? – arielf Mar 12 at 3:07
