Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I currently own an iPhone (hiss!) and use Ubuntu on my PC - not the best combination as I still rely on an installation of Windows to use iTunes. Otherwise I cannot transfer music/ videos/ apps etc. Now I'm assuming that Android doesn't have these stupid restrictions that Apple insist upon but I just want to be sure. So, I just want to be able to transfer music, photos, videos, apps etc between both computers (PC and tablet) - is this easily enough done with Ubuntu? Ideally I just want an external hard drive style arrangement where I just drop files into the device from my PC. I hate having to install additional software (e.g. iTunes)

Anyway hopefully my assumptions are correct but please let me know if there are any known issues. I'm hoping it doesn't involve any techy hacks and workarounds. Much appreciated.

PS I didn't actually choose to buy an iPhone as such but I had a friend selling one and it avoided taking out a phone contract. Really any smart phone would have done, but now I am buying I think I'd rather avoid Apple at all cost - just want to put that out there :)

make sure your android support mass storage mode. Search in XDA forum for info or how to get MTP working in ubuntu. – Web-E Nov 30 '12 at 4:30

MTP, the default in android does not work well with Linux. Instead use SSHDroid or DriodNAS to run a server on the android device and connect to it that way. Newer version of android do not allow you to mount them in UMS mode (like an external drive). There are very good reasons for this that I won't get into here.
