I have an old IBM Thinkpad 2628 from 1998 and I was thinking about putting Ubuntu on it.

Obviously it can't handle Unity, so what can I do to get Ubuntu working on my computer with decent processing (not extremely laggy)? Will Ubuntu work or should I use kubuntu or xubuntu?

Assuming you have more than the baseline 64MB of ram (I believe this is your computer?) lubuntu should work; however, you could try a distro known to be even lighter, such as Puppy Linux (and below that, maybe Wary Puppy Linux); I don't have experience with those distros (the lightest I've used is Xubuntu), but it seems those might be good.

Well.. appears not. :'( I installed it (it took 3 hours XD) and when I start it does the following: Boots up and stays on lubuntu splash screen for 2 minutes, then infinitely starts blinking this message at me: Checking Battery State [ok] Stopping System V runlevel compatibility [ok] Starting [ok] Starting [ok] Stopping [ok] Whats going on here.. what needs to be done? – Sean Webber Nov 30 '12 at 20:23
