So, I installed ubuntu studio from DVD and the installation should work just fine. I assume the problem would be with hardware or BIOS? I have ATI Radeon Graphics Processor as graphics card and Asus M5A97 mobo. Bios hasn't ever been updated. Would there be some compatibility problem?

ATI Radeon Graphics does in most cases, require an additional driver, to get the graphics card function normally. I have never used ubuntu-studio before, but if there is any secure session with lower resolution available (Recovery mode), try that, and see if you can enter it. – denNorske Nov 27 '12 at 10:07
