This is the error I get when I try to open it from terminal using 'software-center'.

softwarecenter.fixme - WARNING - logs to the root logger: '('/usr/share/software-center/softwarecenter/db/database.py', 96, 'open')'
2012-11-26 20:40:09,305 - root - WARNING - failed to add sca db Couldn't detect type of database

I'm on Ubuntu 10.10. Unity won't work on my computer, so I'm stuck with this version.

You have lots of alternatives to Unity that work in newer versions (Xfce, KDE, Lxde, Gnome Shell...). I love Gnome Classic is a good reason to keep 10.10, Unity doesn't work isn't. –  Javier Rivera Nov 26 '12 at 10:47

Further to Javier Rivera's comment, the specific alternatives are: Lubuntu lubuntu.net and Xubuntu xubuntu.org. If it's hardware limitations that are troubling Unity, then you should probably stay away from Kubuntu. KDE is pretty heavy duty. –  Chris Wilson Dec 2 '12 at 12:29
