Au contraire! The responses to my post gave me the invaluable information I needed to take the appropriate action necessary to avert an impending train wreck! Many thanks to the respondents!!! – Larry Augsbury Nov 28 '12 at 20:32

The server is already a train wreak since it has been running an unsupported release for years, thus it is entirely possible that it had a security vulnerability and has been hacked. You need to burn the server and build a new one. At the very least, you need to format it and install 12.10 ( or 12.04 LTS would probably be a better idea given a continued lack of staying on top of upgrades ).

Can you substantiate your answer or its this a theoretical answer to the question? I'm curious as I have not seen this before. – Ringtail Nov 26 '12 at 3:59
While I would certainly agree that it's not a good idea to continue to run 9.10 on a server, I disagree that it means you necessarily have to nuke the server from orbit, if there is nothing else to suggest you have been compromised so I'd class this answer as an overreaction. Formatting is one option, but not the only option. Whatever you do, though, staying on 9.10 is not an option I'd recommend. – thomasrutter Nov 26 '12 at 6:49
@RickGreen, what? – psusi Nov 26 '12 at 16:32

I would recommend a reinstall as the only supported upgrade path is 9.10 -> 10.04 -> 12.04 -> 12.10. A reinstall will be quicker.

The 9.10 -> 10.04 -> 12.04 -> 12.10 upgrade path would be quicker for me. It would only take a few hours of downloading and installing whereas setting everything up from scratch would take days. – thomasrutter Nov 26 '12 at 6:45
The recovery if any of these updates go wrong can take days too :) – Dennis Kaarsemaker Nov 26 '12 at 11:44

The upgrade path from 9.04 is

9.04 -> 9.10 -> 10.04 LTS -> 12.04 LTS -> 12.10

This may be a little time consuming but it's the only way to do it without a complete reinstall.
