Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I know there are a lot of related posts but after searching for hours, none of them has worked for me so i'll post here:

When booting, I receive the error:

error: unknown filesystem
grub rescue>

Trying to boot from USB or CD with either:

  • Ubuntu Live CD
  • Windows XP
  • Super Grub
  • Boot repair
  • Rescatux

Every time I receive the same error message. The only time it displays anything else, is when I ask to boot from a USB that has no mountable image. In which case it will say boot error.

So, once on grub rescue, if I do ls, it gives me:

(hd0) (hd0,msdos5) (hd0,msdos1)

To make things work, I don't know which one is the bootable Linux and which one is the SWAP. You have to know that HD has been reformated. Anyway, trying here for msdos1 but I tried the same with msdos5:

grub rescue> ls (hd0,msdos1)/
error: unknown filesystem
grub rescue> set root=(hd0,msdos1)/
grub rescue> set prefix=(hd0,msdos1)/boot/grub
grub rescue> insmod linux
error: unknown filesystem
grub rescue> insmod normal
error: unknown filesystem

Does anyone have any ideas?

I just want to make it clear that it does not let me boot from a CD, it always go to grub rescue!

I Thank you for your help in advance
