I successfully setup hadoop on ubuntu 10.04 on a single node by going through the steps mentioned in Michael Noll's tutorial ( Running Hadoop On Ubuntu Linux (Single-Node Cluster) ). Now, I'm trying to setup hive on the same machine but I'm stuck as of what to do after I decompress the hive-0.8.1-bin.tar.gz and move it to /usr/local/hive.

Any help would be appreciated but as I'm new to Linux, it would be very helpful if someone could help me step-by-step.

I somehow managed to setup hive and even run it. But to test it when i write show tables query. It gives me the following error: Cleanup action completed FAILED: Error in metadata: javax.jdo.JDOFatalDataStoreException: Failed to create database 'metastore_db', see the next exception for details. NestedThrowables: java.sql.SQLException: Failed to create database 'metastore_db', see the next exception for details. FAILED: Execution Error, return code 1 from org.apache.hadoop.hive.ql.exec.DDLTask – Harman Nov 25 '12 at 12:16
