I am having the following problems trying to load 12.04 onto a Dell XPS 8500:

(0) Live DVD and USB drives both boot but hang on a black screen with blinking underscore.

(1) Booting 12.04 from external hdd works but screen fritzes out at the login screen.

(2) I can boot 12.04 from external hdd by booting into recovery mode, getting a command line and restarting. This gets me to the login screen and login works as it should. Everything appears to be working, e.g. keyboard, mouse, wireless, bluetooth.

Incidentally 11.10 live dvd works fine, but wireless, keyboard and mouse break after install.

How do I fix this, so standard startup works?

Yes, it is a bug. Check your boot loader setup and configuration.
