Yesterday, I had a small update on Ubuntu 12.10. After an update, I turned off my Dell Vostro 3450 machine.

Today, I tried to turn it on. When it started, I chose Ubuntu in my GRUB window, then I saw the Ubuntu logo and after that the screen went black and the only thing I could see is the mouse cursor, which I couldn't move.

My machine is using an Intel HD Graphics 3000 GPU.

Any ideas how to fix this problem?

try booting from an old kernel or in recovery mode. – To Do Nov 22 '12 at 15:08
when on Grub, press "e" go to kernel line and add nomodeset at the end. Then boot (ctrl-x or b don't remember exactly) – jet Nov 23 '12 at 12:36
