I have an HP Pavilion Slimline s3100n and I cannot for the life of me get the wifi to connect and stay connected in any circumstances with network manager or wicd... I'm pulling my freaking hair out with this, and I can't get a dang thing down AT ALL... switching to wicd didn't work, putting my password in the connections editor didn't work... nothing at all is working... everything that everyone else is saying to me is chinese and I really just want my pc to work... please help... I will provide any information needed to help me with this. just instruct me on how to find that information. Don't pass this question by without helping me please... I'm so frustrated...

lol, rare huh? that sucks... I've edited the op to include lsusb thanks, please reply soon :) I've had to reboot my pc 12 times in the past 4 hours... oh I am running a slimline lol... compact case that's probably why they attached it to the back instead of putting it in the case. – iceblueirish Dec 3 '12 at 22:01

Your wireless device uses the driver rt73usb. Some drivers have trouble with mixed mode WPA and WPA2 networks. Please try setting your router to WPA2 only. Some drivers have trouble with 80211N; try setting your router to B and G speeds but not N. Finally, you might do:

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/rt73usb.conf

Add a single line:

options rt73usb nohwcrypt=Y

Proofread, save and close gedit. Reboot and give us your report.

The editing of that file and reboot didn't work... I did save my edits. Does it have to be done in hand with the former that I need to wait until later to do? – iceblueirish Dec 3 '12 at 22:25

Alright update: editing the file didn't work. We checked the modem settings and the router is already set up as wpa2 with a shared passphrase or something like that. On my pc the only options that are available besides wpa1 & Wap2 are none, wep 40/128 bit key (hex or ascii), wep 128 bit passphrase, leap, dynamic wep (802.1x), and wpa1 & wpa2 enterprise. Wep 128 bit passphrase didn't work even though I chose shared key instead of open on the authentication drop down and put the security passphrase for our router in. anything else I can try or another security type? – iceblueirish Dec 4 '12 at 0:01
WPA2 with pre-shared key is fine. The only other suggestion I have is to update to 12.10 and see if the newer kernel version and driver helps. You can test it running the live CD. – chili555 Dec 4 '12 at 1:06
I had this issue on 11.10 as well, hopefully updating helps...I just fear I'll run into way more issues because it's the newest version lol... let me try a live cd and get back to you... will the live cd actually factor the new kernel and driver when I test drive it? – iceblueirish Dec 4 '12 at 1:16
