I'm trying to install 12.10 in an older laptop from a USB drive. The installation appeared to go fine but I get a splash screen without a desktop. I can bring up a terminal with Ctr+Alt T but no desktop. I get a Compiz error, I report it and then back to the splash screen with no desktop.
