This message has come up and I do not know what to do to make it better.

E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, E:Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/security.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_precise-security_main_i18n_Translation-en, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

This question has been asked before and already has an answer. If those answers do not fully address your question, please ask a new question.

Somehow a file in /var/lib/apt/lists got corrupted. Fortunately it's safe to remove them:

sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/*

It'll complain about the partial directory. That is fine. Now you repopulate the lists:

sudo apt-get update
