How do I know if a laptop will work with Ubuntu?

I am about to buy older notebook Lenovo R60 with Intel Core Duo 2x 1.8Ghz, 2048MB DDR2, 80Gb sata HDD and intel GMA graphic card.

Will the Ubuntu or Xubuntu 12.10 be compatible with this configuration out of the box?

Thank you, Jan

This question was marked as an exact duplicate of an existing question.

After a fresh install, xubuntu 12.10 consumes about 500MB memory and Ubuntu 12.10 consumes about 800MB. On a 2GB memory system, I can run the system but can not open many applications such as firefox.

As a more specific example, after an afternoon of browsing, my firefox process is consuming more than 1G memory. How do I find out what's causing the memory usage?

This is interesting. Do you think it might be problem with drivers? – Jan Mares Nov 13 '12 at 12:10
