I posted a questions in ubuntu forums that received no replies. I think because it was poorly worded and I forgot to add tags. I tried to edit it but I am not able to log into the password site now. So here is the question(s).
Questions:
1)Sys monitor "GKrellM System Monitor" shows LOT of traffic on Sr0. ?? What is this? Google search indicates a DVD drive, perhaps? but I don't even have a disk in the drive.
2) Is it safe to enter sudo password into the error message generated by the ACPI (driver??? daemon?? I don't even know what the ACPI is.) **Data follows after questions.
3) Any fixes available for the power management on an ASUS computer and/or the Nvidia cards that a beginner can easily implement?
4) Why am I unable to connect to to places online (2 days in a row - seems to work once.)
5) Are other items I noticed (in data that follows) normal items to see in linux programming code and I have a general error with my wlan0 set up, or is it possible I have been compromised and my webtraffic is being rerouted/monitored for nefarious purposes?
Data: Recently upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Nov 6
Afterwards I noticed the following items.
1) Log is showing that the ACPI, avahi-daeman, and pciehp are sending multiple error messages - 2-3 every second. Due to Nvidia driver and power management of my ASUS computer setting, probably? Is there a fix for this that I can easily "click install" through the updater?
2) When I enter passwords online the website did not seem reload or try to send info out. . Instead an error "System Program Error" message appears instead. If i clicked report it asked for my sudo password for access to logs (which I probably stupidly entered.. but then nothing happened.) ***New DATA: forums indicate this is an message from ACPI should I enter my password - is it safe?
3) I added a sys monitor "GKrellM System Monitor" and noticed a LOT of traffic on Sr0. ?? what is this? Google search indicates a DVD drive, perhaps? but I don't even have a disk in the drive.
4) A friend suggested I add EtherApe which I did. When I hit enter on a webpage to submit a password --the page changes.. (for example if I am trying to go to facebook.com. htpps.facebook.com shows up on etherape. When I click enter it changes to lax02s01-in-f1-le100.net, evan.roth.com, www sedoparking.com, srv6.paul.activeminds.net, or ae-1-60.edge7.Frankfort1.level3.net ) Is this normal?
If I change my password using a friends computer I can sign into places such as facebook, email etc on their computer. If I try my computer I can sign in once. Then it won't work from mine or their computer. I am concerned because I do work from home and need to sign onto the work server. I don't feel like I can safely do that. (Not to mention how annoying it is to have to use someone's computer anytime I want to log into a place or to have keep changing my password.)
5) In addition, in the logs I noticed these cryptic lines. "The canary thread is apparently starving." "(The name ofmy wlan0) has security, and secrets exist. No new secrets needed." SCPlugin-Ifupdown: init! ...(many more lines here looks like if than loop.. if used then redirects devices.. else it sets up a UVD link?? and joins a worldcast. Activating service name='org.freedesktop.PackageKit' and adds something called udisks. Is this normal linux code or could it indicate a compromised system? :( ??
{And (sorry unrelated, mostly) how do I exit vim? Q won't work. (This silly question was answered - Best answer = don't use vim - use "more" -it is best way for beginners to read logs.}
