I'm looking to do something similar to the Global Menu and I'm wondering how the Unity shell does this. How it gets the relevant menu associated with the active window is specifically what I'd most like to know. Then, how does it tell the window not to display that menu?

@StephenMyall: I think the OP asks how does it work, not why. Probably on the level of API calls etc. Which, on the other hand, may be too technical for this site... –  Sergey Nov 9 '12 at 2:40
