I am still trying to find a solution to this problem: boot Xubuntu 12.04 from a USB 2.0 external HD when the PC's BIOS does not allow booting from a USB.
I have tried plop, and plopkexec. That didn't work for me. I've given up on them as a solution to my problem.
However, I came across these:
I think either of these will do what I want to do. My only concern is the use of GRUB in these solutions rather than GRUB2. The Xubuntu I want to boot is installed with GRUB2.
Can someone show me how I can build the boot CD described in the BootFromUSB write-up above, but with GRUB2, rather than GRUB? Or perhaps point me to some appropriate documentation.
