Are you buying a laptop or a desktop? And by old windows games you mean games from < 2005? – Dr_Bunsen Nov 2 '12 at 14:25

Many of the games at Good old Games (gog.com) will work well in wine. You can try play on linux to help make the process smoother.

Always check wineHQ for status of applications before you buy them though.

Also, you could try buying a better machine. not all laptops have Intel cards, several have Nvidia or ATI cards. Nvidia, in my experience is a bit better supported.

Cross over games is another option http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/

Dosbox is an option for even older games, and Virtual Box is an option for late 90's games that just won't run in dos box.

If you truly want to use your laptop for gaming though, I recommend you get one with a nvidia card. You will have a much better time.
