When I plug in my external monitor to my laptop, AMD Catalyst Control Center doesn't provide me the option for the preferred resolution (1920x1080). However if the monitor is plugged in and I reboot, it does provide me the option and everything works great.
I'm using Ubuntu 12.04, just installed the latest fglrx drivers from ATI, using an AMD Radeon HD 5000 series card.
