Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

Forgive me if this question is very basic.

I was reading the ubuntu wiki and it says downloads made off of a live cd are lost after the machine is turned off because space is limited. I thought because the live cd is a cd-r it couldn't be used as a storage device. How does it hold downloads/files even if temporary? Or are they held somewhere else?

Also, is the live cd called 'system reserved' in the home folder or is that something different?

Please note I did try to find these answers before posting these questions. I would be happy to read up related info on my own but it can be tough asking the right questions without knowing all the terminology. Thanks for the help.
