I have two computers running Ubuntu 12.04 - a home server and a laptop. I have enabled the 'desktop sharing' on the server and am attempting to use the 'remote desktop viewer' on the second machine. However, it just responds with 'Connection to host I.p.I.p was closed.'

I can successfully connect to the server via SSH.

Is there any way I can see on the server that the VNC server is running? Are there any logs I can check? Are attempted connections logged on the server?

I have abandoned 'desktop sharing' and am now just using SSH to get into the server. After a number of discussions I came to realise that the 'desktop sharing' feature did not give me all I needed. But a shame it did not work anyway. – sbarlster Nov 3 '12 at 9:05
