First, let's make sure to actually check that your password is changed/corrupted.

  1. At the Ubuntu login screen, click Ctrl-Alt-F2. This will bring up the TTY login screen. Type your username (not you full name, the shorter one that's always lowercase) and click enter. Then type in your password (the one you had before). Does it let you log in? Also try with a blank password. (If your password truly has changed, then you shouldn't be able to log in here)

  2. Make sure your keyboard configuration isn't messed up by going to the terminal and clicking characters. (Should be the same as before)

  3. Can you log into the guest account? (Should be Yes)

If everything points to your password being corrupted/changed, move on to this next step.

Try entering recovery mode. To do so, restart your computer. Immediately after your computer restarts, hold the Shift Button. When you see a menu, stop. In that menu you should see Advanced options for Ubuntu. Select that. You will then see Ubuntu, with Linux [Insert Kernel Here] (recovery mode). Select that. You will then log into single-user mode (root-only mode). Type in passwd [username]. Enter your new password. Reboot and try to log in in both the GUI and TTY.

On the other hand, if you were one of the fellows who added a password to your root account, or if you have another account with sudo access, just hop onto the same terminal used to check your account and log in with that user/password and use the passwd [user] command. No Recover Mode necessary.

Let us know how this all works out.

Terms used in here:

root - The ultimate user of the system. It controls and can do anything, including breaking your system. Be careful with it.

TTY - Teletypewriter. An older term from when teletypewriters were actually used. Used now for a terminal login on the monitor.

GUI - Graphical user interface. Basically, it uses a mouse and has pretty icons instead of just keyboard and text.

su - Running this command logs you in as root.

sudo - A nifty little program that gives root access to a non-root user. It's much more secure than su and highly recommended if you're doing anything that needs root access. You need to be an Administrative user or a sudoer to use it.

Thanks for you help, there is no login screen, Ubuntu open without. – dupont Oct 27 '12 at 8:08
If I clic [Ctrl-Alt-F2], a black screen sort of terminal open, I type in my login, doesn't ask me password, and say welcome to Ubuntu 12.10. It seems there is a conflict when you choose not to enter password. – dupont Oct 27 '12 at 8:19

From the comments you made above, it sounds like your password is blank. Unfortunately, you also stated that you installed Windows 7, so this question is no longer valid.
