I have a super powered desktop machine running ubuntu version : Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS The syetem specs are : 12xIntel(R) Xeon(R)CPU W3690 @ 3.47GHz with 12324MB RAM

The machine used to run very nicely until a few weeks ago, but now something has happened and its become really slow. The worst situation is when I have logged into a remote machine through ssh and I am running some commands there, which downloads some pacakges/files between remote machines (my machine is not involved in the download) and prints a lot of data on my terminal window, while doing this its a pain to even move the mouse pointer ! I am also running vm-ware to run a windows 7 64 bit with a RAM of 2 GB.

I know its not becuase the no of programs that I run, although they are many but it used to run fine just a couple of weeks ago and also my colleageus have the same machines and they are running all the stuff that I run, but there machines are woriking fine. but I cant figure out whats gone wrong with my machine.

Any tips on how can I find out whats wrong. I am a total noob when it comes to system performance in ubuntu, so any tips, tools to identify the problem would be great. I have tried the simple top command but it doesn't show anything out of the ordinay. Thanks a lot
