I've just upgraded from 12.04 to 12.10. The upgrade went smoothly I think, but when I log in now everything is black, I can only see my mouse cursor.

At first I could see my old wallpaper, but no launcher or menu bar or icons and after reboot it's now only black. I've seen similar questions and forum topics, but anything I've tried has not helped. Through Ctrl+Alt+F1 I have uninstalled nVidia drivers (I have a GeForce 6200) and reinstalled them, I have tried to reinstall lightdm, I've tried to install Linux headers, but nothing is working.

It seems similar to a problem I had when I first upgraded to 12.04, but then I was able to avoid issues using the Unity 2D login feature until nVidia drivers were upgraded, this is particularly annoying not being able to see anything. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Try boot with nvidia.modeset=0 and see where that gets you. –  shakabra Oct 19 '12 at 7:31
