My beloved and hard working 10.04 LTS x86_64 workstation can no long run in anything but command-line no, xorg won't run.
When my nvidia GT260 adapter failed, I replaced with a GT560i. The nvidia-current driver (173) for Lucid Lynx does not support that adapter. So I (reluctantly) installed nvidia propietary driver 295 from nvidia.com. With the last kernel upgrade, this driver no longer works. Upgrading to the nvidia's 304 driver also fails.
To at least get some functionality, I began to revert to nouveau, but that failed due to a bug in nvidia-common ( around since Apr and still not assigned. "IndexError: list index out of range")
Upgrading to 12.04 is not a solution because key features available in Lucid Lynx are not available in 12.04, I know because I tried for months to get a test installation to use them.
Desperate for an answer as to what can I do to get it working?
